With the deadline just around the corner, The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is reminding employers and other businesses to file their W-2 forms and other wage statements for the 2022 tax year by Jan. 31, 2023.
What To File
Employers must file the following forms with the Social Security Administration by January 31:
The January 31 deadline also applies to Forms 1099-NEC, Nonemployee Compensation filed with the IRS to report non-employee compensation to independent contractors.
Be Prepared
It’s important to be prepared to file on time. Employers should verify or update employee information, like names, addresses and Social Security numbers or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers. They should also ensure their company’s account information is current and active with the Social Security Administration and order paper W-2 forms, if needed.
Avoid Penalties
Please note, there are no automatic extensions available to file W-2 forms. Failure to meet this deadline can result in penalties and paying interest.
For more information, read the instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 and the Information Return Penalties page.
