Beene Garter Celebrates 17 Years As A Best And Brightest Company To Work For®

We’re excited to share that Beene Garter was named one of West Michigan’s Best and Brightest Companies to Work For® – our 17th year in a row!

We’re so honored to receive this award in 2019. And, we’re grateful to our staff and partners for making it possible.

According to the Best and Brightest website, “Organizations are assessed based on categories such as communication, work-life balance, employee education, diversity, recognition, retention, and more.”

The National Association for Business Resources (NABR) presents this award to companies throughout the U.S.

 

How is Beene Garter a Best and Brightest Company to Work For®?

At Beene Garter, we pursue many initiatives to enhance the work lives of our employees.

Three of our firm’s top initiatives are maintaining a healthy work-life balance, supporting continuous education, and cultivating an open door policy.

Here’s an overview of how we pursue each initiative.

 

1. Work-life balance

The accounting industry is well-known for working long hours during tax season. While we can’t deny the cyclical demands of the industry, we do our best to keep it balanced.

During tax season, we cap our tax and audit staff hours at 56. On Saturdays, staff members have the option to work remotely or in the office.

Then, we begin our flex schedule in June. Employees who choose to “flex” work a set number of hours each week and take a work day or afternoon off.

Our tax and audit staff reap the greatest reward during flex season, but the program is open to all departments. Any full-time employee that wants to participate can.

It runs for three months and gives our hard-working employees time back for their families, personal pursuits, health, and enjoying Michigan’s beautiful summer weather.

In addition to flex scheduling, we offer a generous paid time off (PTO) policy to our people. Everyone at Beene Garter starts with a minimum of three weeks of PTO. This time increases the longer they’re with the firm.

Each individual chooses how they want to use their time, but we highly encourage that they use most – if not all of it – each year.

At the core of our policies around work-life balance, is the belief that everyone deserves to spend time with family and time to care for themselves. Happy and healthy people are people we want to work with and to serve our clients. Our HR initiatives reflect that.

 

2. Continuing education

Continuing education isn’t just important for our CPAs to keep their licenses. It’s critical to the success of each employee, our firm, and our clients’ businesses.

So, we’re always supportive of professional development opportunities for our team members. There’s always something new to learn. We’re never done.

We like to make it easy for our people. We host educational sessions throughout the summer. In these sessions, members of our tax and audit teams update each other on the latest laws, standards, and policies.

We invite all staff members to dive into what they enjoy doing. Explore new possibilities. Share their knowledge.

Everyone benefits from learning more. Whether that takes the form of networking, conferences, joining local associations, watching webinars, or advancing their degrees, we support each person’s pursuit of more knowledge.

 

3. Open door policy

Our office space may be open concept, but we build on it to cultivate an open door policy. Anyone – at any level – can work with someone else on a project.

We collaborate across departments and within to hit goals and provide the best solutions to our clients. All throughout our firm, you’ll find our people collaborating, asking questions, and learning from each other.

Members of our tax and audit teams work closely with our partners on multiple projects. As simple as this seems, this level of openness isn’t common in the accounting industry.

 

These are just three of our notable initiatives. There are many more pieces to Beene Garter that make it a great place to work. As workforce trends develop, West Michigan evolves, and the accounting industry changes, we’ll continue to pursue initiatives that align with our firm’s values and mission.
